NetBeans
is a successful open source project with a very broad user community
continues to grow, and has nearly 100 partners (and counting!). Sun Microsystems founded the NetBeans open source project in June 2000 and continues to be a major sponsor.
Currently there are two products: the NetBeans IDE and NetBeans Platform.
The NetBeans IDE is a development environment - a Kakas for programmers to write, compile, and deploy fault finding program. Netbeans IDE written in Java - but can support other programming languages. There are many modules to extend the NetBeans IDE. NetBeans IDE is a free product with no restrictions on how it is used.
There is also a NetBeans Platform; a foundation that is modular and can be expanded to be used as the basic software to make large desktop applications. ISV partners provide value added plug-ins that can be easily integrated into the Platform and can also be used to make kakas and the solution itself.
